A wonderful farewell from our graduating "8th Grade Study Hall Library Elves"The Library
Walk through the door, And enjoy and explore. Enter a place of freedom, Like an intellectual Garden of Eden. Find a quiet nook, Pick a book, Or if you're like me, Have a reading spree. Huddle in a comfy chair, Your personal library lair. And let your imagination run free, Over a mythical sea, Even an elven wood, It's easily understood. How the mind can roam In a creative dome Where life is sweet as a cherry, Just like in the library.

Using credible sources, we researched the answer to the question, "Why do zebras have stripes?" We learned that new research indicates that zebras have stripes not for camouflage, but because stripes keep them cooler, and repel horseflies, who carry diseases. The photos show our skit: the horseflies leave the striped zebras alone and go on to attack solid-colored animals instead.
So it's Poetry Month and National Library Week. I wanted to find something really special. Here is a great excerpt from Jacqueline Woodson's powerful poetry memoir, Brown Girl Dreaming. How To Listen #5 What is your one dream, My friend Maria asks me. Your one wish come true? -Jacqueline Woodson, Brown Girl Dreaming Available to borrow from our library!
We have a new genre section in our library. We now have a section for our wordless picture books. These books develop fluency, vocabulary, and speaking skills; show us a new way to love books; build visual literacy; and inspire the artists in all of us. Come check 'em out!
Ursula Vernon came to speak with our students about her writing and illustrating process. She shared with us that fairy tales are a great way to be inspired. She and the kids wrote a new twist on The Princess and the Frog... The Princess and the Shark. This was the story of the prince who was turned in to a shark in a freak nuclear waste accident involving a sea urchin. Ms. Vernon signed personalized books, and she was interviewed by two of our students for a technology research project. What a great visit!
We collected money during the book fair and raised enough to purchase these for children who don't have any books. So inspirational! We are delighted to welcome career speakers who are speaking with our 7th graders about their careers. Above are a strategic financial analyst, an attorney, a venture capitalist, a medical engineer, a residential real estate properties business owner, a sports journalist, a marine botany biologist, and a pharmaceutical regional field coordinator. We are now accepting applications for the new school year for our Library Lions team. Library Lions help with Kindergartners, make book deliveries and pick ups, work on our library website, create artwork for the library, help create new sections in the library, make displays, and more. We couldn't do it without them!
Interested students in grades 5 - 8 may pick up an application. Applications are due Thursday, September 17. Applicants with a strong application will be interviewed to determine if they are a good fit for our student crew team. Library Lions serve a minimum of one shift a week, either in the morning before school, or during recess. Students receive service hours credit for serving on the Lions. School libraries across the nation are replacing the Dewey Decimal system with reader-friendly genres. As part of our mission to transform our OLL Library Media Center into a 21st-century center of reading joy and independent learning, we have replaced many of our Dewey labels with genre sections. The kids love it, and have been checking out a lot of books from the new sections. We are helping them find their reading passion. A class explores the new sections.
Oh my goodness, I am so excited! Our book fair is open! There are TONS of really, really good books! New this year are recommendations from our teachers and me. Look for the fish on the blue wall with our teachers' recommendations and the "Librarians pick" bookmarks in my favorite recommended books. Calixto, one of our caretaker crew, welcomes you to Book Fair Under the Sea.
